Somatics For Neck & Shoulders

August 5, 2014

You’ve probably seen my neck stretches video, it’s one that I recommend to anyone with neck tension if they have the pain-free range of motion necessary for the movements. The problem with that video is that, while it’s great daily maintenance and can often be just what you need in the moment for a quick fix, its not really getting to the root of the problem.

The root in this case is likely to be habitual patterns of movement and posture that bring unnecessary tension into your neck and shoulder muscles. This may come as a surprise, but while us human beings are inherently lazy (I mean that in the best way possible – we’re always trying to find the easiest way to accomplish a goal), we’re so good at finding the hardest and most inefficient ways of moving, standing and sitting.

I know you can’t disagree with that!

Somatics is a movement therapy developed by a student of Feldenkrais, Thomas Hanna, that works to re-train your brain to engage your muscles in a more efficient way. Essentially it’s a method of teaching the brain to find the easy way to move or be still in your body.

So let’s get lazy and get rid of neck and shoulder tension!
